Self-care rituals: Bathing

Self-care rituals: Bathing

Why taking a bath is one little thing most of us can do for our wellbeing

I will admit that I was never a big fan of baths.

After all, a shower is much faster and more convenient if you want to wash and get clean. A bath just demands more time and effort which we often see as a luxury we can’t afford. But then, the purpose of a bath is not really about getting clean in the same efficient way as a shower. It’s more about washing away something altogether different.

You arrive carrying the inevitable burdens of modern-day life, stressed, mind full, muscles tight, bones aching but, when done right, a bath can leave you feeling just that bit better, more human and balanced.

Here are our top tips for creating the perfect ritual.

1. Temperature is key

There is science behind this one. The ideal temperature is between 37C and 40C. This range is where your stress hormone (cortisol) is replaced by endorphins, responsible for making us feel happier. The stress subsides and you feel more like you.

2. Free your mind

Some people like to take a book in the bath and the less risk adverse may even venture in with a tablet. Personally, the risk of a soggy book or worse would not help relieve my stress levels. No distractions. A playlist or podcast may work for you, but the idea is to create a space to free up your mind.

3. The right essential oils

Why would you want to lie in plain old water? Essential oils have many aromatherapy benefits that can leave you feeling calm and restored, uplifted and rebalanced. Some oils are good for stress and anxiety, so it is worth choosing the right combination.

4. Salts and minerals

Good bath salts can make all the difference. Bath salts are packed with minerals that can cleanse, hydrate and exfoliate the skin, leaving it healthier and more radiant.

Which salts to choose?

Choose Epsom salts for magnesium which is believed to soothe sore muscles, reduce stress and soften skin.

Dead sea salts are rich in minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium, helping to improve skin moisture, enhance skin barrier function and stimulate blood circulation.

Himalayan pink salts are gentle on the skin and are known for anti-inflammatory properties to help reduce joint pain.
